Heat haze [modify] Heat haze, likewise called heat shimmer, describes the inferior mirage observed when viewing objects through a mass of heated air. Typical circumstances when heat haze happens consist of pictures of objects seen throughout asphalt concrete (likewise called tarmac) roads and over masonry rooftops on hot days, above and behind fire (as in burning candles, patio heaters, and campfires), and through exhaust gases from jet engines.
Convection triggers the temperature level of the air to differ, and the variation between the hot air at the surface area of the roadway and the denser cool air above it creates a gradient in the refractive index of the air. This produces a blurred glittering impact, which hinders the ability to deal with the image and increases when the image is amplified through a telescope or telephoto lens.
Light from the sky at a shallow angle to the road is refracted by the index gradient, making it look like if the sky is reflected by the road's surface area. The mind translates this as a swimming pool of water on the road, given that water likewise reflects the sky. The illusion fades as the observer approaches the miraged things.
This sort of inferior mirage is typically called a "desert mirage" or "highway mirage". Both sand and tarmac can become really hot when exposed to the sun, easily being more than 10 C (18 F) greater than the air a meter above, enough to make conditions suitable to cause the mirage.
Superior mirage [edit] A synthetic mirage, using sugar solutions to replicate the inversion layers. A feline is seen checking out a glass, which has three layers of solution, with reducing refractive index from bottom to top. The feline appears in multiple images. This mimics an atmosphere with 2 inversion layers. A remarkable mirage is one in which the mirage image seems situated above the genuine item.
This unusual plan is called a temperature level inversion, because warm air above cold air is the reverse of the regular temperature level gradient of the environment throughout the daytime. Going through the temperature inversion, the light rays are bent down, therefore the image appears above the true object, hence the name remarkable.
